
Why You Should Stop Cutting Cold Glass
Cutting cold glass is basically a gamble. When you run a diamond or carbide wheel across a cold surface, you’re creating a ton of localized stress. The problem is that if the glass is too chilled, the crack doesn’t behave. It jumps. It wanders. That’s how you end up with those annoying chips or “corner breakouts” that ruin a perfectly good piece. To stop that, we use infrared (IR) preheating. It basically calms the material down before the blade even touches it. The secret is in the heat. Infrared lamps dump energy straight into the glass molecules. This lowers the viscosity and kills off that internal brittleness. The result? The score line becomes predictable. Instead of a jagged, messy edge, the fracture follows the line exactly where you want it to go. It’s a clean snap. Every time. Picking your gear If you’re running a container line, go with short-wave IR quartz lamps. They penetrate the glass way faster than medium or long-wave options. Plus, they don’t take up half your factory floor since you don’t need a massive conveyor setup to get the job done. But here’s the tricky part: you have to balance your wattage and your distance. Sure, high wattage gives you the heat you need for fast line speeds, but if the lamp is too close, you’ll shock the glass. I usually suggest a staggered lamp array. It spreads the heat evenly across the curves of the container so you don’t get hot spots. The reality check Now, preheating isn’t some magic wand. If you go overboard and overheat the glass, you’re just trading one problem for another. You’ll create new thermal stresses, and the container might just crack on its own once it cools down. You have to dial in your sensors. You’re looking for a very specific window—just enough to soften the surface tension, but not enough to actually warp the glass. And one last thing: check your cooling fans. If they aren’t beefy enough to handle the ambient heat from those lamps, your control electronics are going to fry. And nobody wants to deal with that on a Tuesday afternoon.
