Nobody likes that blinding flash of light when you flip the switch in the bathroom, especially if you’ve just woken up or you’re bathing a baby. Those infrared lamps are great for instant warmth, but without the right tweaks, they can feel more like a police spotlight than a cozy heater. The goal is to make sure the lamp focuses on warming you up, not lighting up the entire neighborhood. A few things to watch out for during install These things get hot. Really hot. Make sure your fixture housing is actually rated for the wattage you’re using. If it’s not, you’ll end up warping the reflector, which is a mess. And a quick heads-up on the electrics: if you’re putting a bunch of these in one bathroom, keep an eye on your circuit load. High-wattage infrared lamps can be power-hungry. If you don’t plan the wiring for the total draw, you’ll be tripping your breakers more often than you’d like. Now, here is the trade-off. Those eye-protection coatings do take away a tiny bit of the overall heat efficiency compared to a completely clear tube. You lose a small percentage of that “punch,” but it’s a trade I’d make every time for the sake of safety and comfort at home.
