Ever stepped into a bathroom and turned on the heater, only to feel like you’re staring directly into the sun? Most of these heaters use short-wave infrared to get you warm fast. It works. But the tradeoff is that harsh, blinding glare. It’s a pain for anyone, but for a baby with sensitive eyes, it’s actually a real problem. Here is how we fix that.
Killing the Glare, Keeping the Heat
We don’t want to lose the warmth, just the “flashbang” effect. To do this, we use special coatings or doped quartz glass on the tubes. Think of it like a pair of sunglasses for the heater. These filters block out the visible light—especially those sharp blue peaks—but let the infrared heat slide right through. The result? You get all the cozy warmth without the ocular stress. It’s a much softer glow that doesn’t make you want to squint.
The Balancing Act
Now, there’s a little catch here. When you filter out the light, the lamp looks dimmer. If you’re an engineer, you’ll notice the “luminous flux” drops, but the wattage stays the same. You’re still getting the heat; you just can’t see it as intensely. It’s a bit of a tightrope walk. If the coating is too thick, you lose heating power. Too thin, and you’re back to blinding yourself. We spend a lot of time getting that thickness just right.
Getting the Setup Right
Putting these into a bathroom fixture isn’t just about plugging them in. These things get hot. Fast. The housing has to be tough enough to handle the temperature of that quartz tube. We use heat-resistant reflectors to push the warmth downward, which spreads the heat across the room and keeps the light diffused. And a pro tip: make sure your housing is vented properly. If the air can’t move, you’ll fry your internal wiring way sooner than you should.
