
Stop Your Glass From Cracking: A Real-World Look at Nip Roller Preheating
If you’ve ever seen a glass vessel shatter during tempering or forming, you know that sinking feeling. It usually happens because of a sudden temperature drop—basically, the glass hits a cold spot and snaps. To stop that from happening, we use short-wave infrared (IR) lamps to preheat the nip rollers. The idea is simple: keep the glass surface at the right temperature before it even touches the rollers. No cold metal, no thermal shock, no broken glass. Speed is everything. Most resistive heaters are just too sluggish. They have too much “thermal mass,” which is a fancy way of saying they take forever to heat up or cool down. They lag. That’s why we go with halogen-filled quartz lamps. These things react almost instantly. When you pair them with fast-switching SCR controllers, you can tweak the heat in milliseconds. It makes life so much easier on the floor. If your line slows down, the power drops immediately. You don’t have to worry about scorching the glass or overheating the system because it adjusts on the fly. The trade-off with high power Now, high-wattage IR tubes are great because they punch through the glass surface quickly. But there’s a catch. When you cram that much energy into a tight nip roller housing, things get hot. Really hot. If you aren’t careful, the ambient heat around the lamp sockets will spike and fry your equipment. You’ve got to get your cooling fans and ventilation right, or you’ll be replacing burnt-out lamp ends way more often than you’d like. Keeping things running We don’t believe in making maintenance a nightmare. We use standard connectors like R7s or Sk15 so your team can just swap out a blown lamp and get back to work. No need to rewire the whole rack. One quick tip: if your shop is dusty or oily, go with coated quartz tubes. If you don’t, that grime bakes onto the glass, creates hot spots, and eventually cracks the tube. And for heaven’s sake, keep the lenses clean. It’s the only way to make sure the heat hits the roller evenly across the whole width.
